Description

Books are the foundation of all Read-a-Rama programming. This course provides background and context for intentionally curating your camp library. You'll be asked to consider your readers and get to know the rationale behind why specific authors and illustrators are highlighed in RaR camps. You'll also get more insights into the books themselves.

This brief course ends with a discussion of the books you will include in your camp library.

Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. Choose high-interest books.

  2. Intentionally choose diverse book content.

  3. Select books appropriate for diverse reading levels.

  4. Include various formats (picture books, graphic novels, etc).

  5. Strategically selecti books with excellent art, ideally feature books with BIPOC authors and BIPOC illustrators.

  6. Push yourself to include contemporary books (don’t just rely on “the classics” or what you now, what your favorites were as a child).

Love the addition of Debbie Reese's "curtains" to R. Sims Bishop's windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors!

Great thought-provoking prompts about what to look for in a book. It would be good to see a slide on good places to go to get started finding good books.

I appreciated the note that just because there's representation doesn't mean that it's good representation. Is it adding specificity? Genuine appreciation? Is it coming from an author with cultural competency in what the book is discussing?

Great overview of concepts for creating a collection and building out based on your readers. I really enjoyed the build-your-own activity in this module.
